What to Wear for an MBA Interview
First impressions are quickly formed and hard to reverse.
Research consistently shows that first impressions are made within seconds, often based on factors such as appearance, body language, and tone of voice. No one is suggesting that a great outfit alone will secure you a place at a top MBA programme, but how you present yourself is a meaningful part of the first impression you create.
For MBA interviews, unless a school has explicitly said otherwise, you should assume professional dress, as you would for a job interview. In practice, this means formal business attire: suits, blazers, and polished workwear that signals professionalism and preparation.
If your interview is in person, this applies head to toe. For online interviews, while technically no one will see what you’re wearing below the waist, many candidates find it helpful to dress fully in interview attire. Being “fully suited and booted” can help put you in the right mindset and reinforce the sense that this is a serious, important conversation.
So why does what you wear matter? Beyond first impressions, it signals effort and respect. It shows that you understand the context of the interview, that you’ve prepared thoughtfully, and that you’re taking the opportunity seriously. Admissions committees aren’t looking for fashion statements, they’re looking for professionalism, judgement, and self-awareness.
While attire helps set the tone, confidence ultimately comes from preparation. Interview coaching can help turn a strong written application into a compelling live conversation.
