How long should you spend on an MBA application?
Candidates often ask when they should start preparing their MBA application. As a rule, I recommend starting on your application between 3 and 6 months ahead of the deadline you are targeting.
There are many elements to an MBA application, from test preparation to letters of recommendation. The further in advance you understand exactly what is required, the better you can plan your time and ensure that you meet the deadline with minimal stress. Putting in the work that is needed to produce a strong application takes time, so getting started early is hugely beneficial. It will also mean you find it much easier to balance your MBA applications with your other commitments.
The essay questions are typically one aspect of the application process that is particularly time consuming. A rushed essay is rarely a good essay. Schools are looking for interesting, well-written essays that show evidence of self-reflection. You’ll need to spend some time reflecting on the questions and your experiences to date. It will likely take several iterations before you have a version that you would be happy to submit.
So if you’re targeting round 1 deadlines, now is the time to start thinking about where you might want to apply and doing your research. Attending events such as MBA fairs, school open days and webinars is a good place to start. Connecting with current students and alumni is also a great way to get more insight into your target schools and their programmes.
