DOs and DON’Ts of MBA letters of recommendation
Most Schools require two letters of recommendation as part of the MBA application process. The significance of the letter or recommendation is that it gives the school another perspective on your experience, skills and potential. Your task is simply to ask the right people! Here are some DOs and DON’Ts when it comes to MBA letters of recommendation.
DO – read the school’s requirements and ensure that the person you are asking meets the criteria. Usually at least one of your letters of recommendation needs to come from a direct supervisor.
DON’T – just ask the most senior person you know. It doesn’t matter what their job title is, what matters is whether they can provide insights into your character, how you work and what you can bring to a team.
DO – check with them first! Don’t put someone’s details on your MBA application without asking first. It can take some time to write a letter of recommendation, so make sure they are happy to do it. It helps to give them as much notice as possible.
DON’T – ask a friend or family member. These won’t usually be acceptable for a letter of recommendation.
DO – remind them if necessary! You don’t want your application being held up due to a missing reference.
