Do business schools prefer GMAT or GRE?

The simple answer to this question is that generally schools do not have a preference between the two tests. The standardised test score is a way for them to see how you compare against other candidates and give them an indication of your academic ability.

When deciding which test to take, it’s important to understand some of the key differences between the two. I’ve highlighted a few of these differences here, but I recommend doing some further research on this.

1. Difficulty adaptivity – the GMAT is question adaptive, whereas the GRE is section adaptive. This means that with the GMAT, how you answer a question will impact the level of the next question you see. Whereas the GRE has two verbal and two quant sections – how well you do on the first section will determine which second section you get.

2. Length of test – the GMAT is a longer test at 135 minutes, compared to the GRE’s 118 minutes. The GMAT does also offer an option 10-minute break.

3. Components – the GRE has an essay section in addition to the verbal and quant elements, whereas the GMAT has a data insights section.

When deciding which test is right for you, it is advisable to try both and see which one you prefer. You can find free of charge practice tests online.

Schools don’t generally mind which test you have taken – they are looking at the percentiles you achieved. This tells them how you performed in relation to other test takers. A strong GMAT or GRE score can strengthen your application, but it certainly isn’t the be-all and end-all. They will look at your test score alongside all aspects of your application and take a holistic approach. It’s just one piece of the puzzle!
